Ugandan opposition leader still in hiding as feud with president’s son escalates
Bobi Wine, Uganda’s most prominent opposition figure, remains in hiding nearly three weeks after a disputed election. His whereabouts have been unknown since 16 January, when he said he escaped a night raid by police and military that left his family behind. According to official results the election was won by President Yoweri Museveni, a result Wine rejects.
From his hideouts Wine has posted on X rejecting the results and taunting the military, saying he would resurface at an appropriate time and calling on the regime to relinquish power. He also posted that he was 'concealed by the people' and challenged authorities to find him.
The posts drew a sharp response from Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the president’s son and the country’s military chief. In now-deleted posts Kainerugaba declared Wine wanted 'dead or alive', threatened bodily harm and said 'We have killed 22 NUP terrorists since last week' before adding 'I’m praying the 23rd is Kabobi'.
