UK issues widespread snow and ice warnings as Storm Goretti nears
Fresh snow and ice warnings have been issued across the UK as Storm Goretti approaches, Independent.co reports. A yellow weather warning for ice covering almost all of England and Wales will remain in place until 10am on Wednesday, and Scotland has a yellow warning for snow and ice in place until midnight on Thursday.
Forecasters said Storm Goretti — named by Meteo‑France and the first storm to be named in 2026 — is expected to bring wintry conditions to most of the UK on Thursday and Friday and could lead to further school closures after hundreds were shut on Tuesday. Eurostar warned its services are likely to see "severe delays" and last‑minute cancellations, while rail passengers in the UK are also likely to face disruption.
Aberdeenshire Council declared a "major incident" as ongoing snow caused travel disruption and school closures, and Police Scotland said the impact is likely to be felt over the next few days and urged people to follow travel advice. Disruption is already spreading internationally: Amsterdam’s Schiphol reported limited air traffic and KLM said supplies of de‑icing fluid were "under pressure", with Flightradar24 calculating 45 per cent of flights cancelled on Tuesday, 171 flights grounded for Wednesday and around 2,500 cancellations since last Friday affecting at least one‑third of a million passengers.
