UK police advise Sikh activist to boost security amid alleged Hindu nationalist threats
Police have advised high-profile Sikh activist Paramjeet Singh Pamma, 52, in the UK to install security cameras at his home and reinforce door locks because of threats from Hindu nationalist elements, Singh Pamma said.
He said he had been visited by police and received verbal advice to increase his security after intelligence suggested threats to his safety. Singh Pamma said the threats were linked to the Indian government and accused UK ministers of failing to take what he called relentless transnational repression by India seriously; the Indian embassy declined to comment.
Singh Pamma is a figure in the Khalistan movement, which is outlawed in India and described by Indian officials as a terrorist threat. MI5 has warned that foreign governments are increasingly targeting dissidents on UK soil, saying investigations into state threats have grown by 48% since 2022, and a parliamentary joint committee listed India as a country of concern.
Singh Pamma said he is regularly visited by local and counter-terrorism police and was last visited in October; he has been forced to live separately from his family after threats. The Home Office said it would not comment on individual cases and that the safety of British Sikhs remains a priority; local police and the Indian high commission also declined to comment. It remains unconfirmed whether the Indian government is responsible for the threats Singh Pamma reports.
