UK winter rambles that finish in a cosy pub
A new round-up highlights 11 winter walks across the UK, each ending at a welcoming pub. Routes range from short, family-friendly rambles to longer coastal and hill treks, pairing crisp winter landscapes with hearty pints and roasts. In East Sussex, a 7-mile circular from Ditchling village car park (about five hours) climbs to Ditchling Beacon and follows the South Downs Way before dropping to Plumpton.
The route visits three pubs, including the Half Moon at Plumpton, known for local produce, Plumpton Estate wine and a famous pub painting; Sunday roast menus and vegan options are available. In London an 8-mile Highgate to Little Venice walk (around 3½ hours) starts at Highgate tube, passes Highgate Cemetery, Hampstead Heath, Primrose Hill and Abbey Road, and finishes at the Prince Alfred in Maida Vale, prized for its vintage interior.
From Bath a 10-mile Cotswold Way outing (about five hours) leaves Bath Abbey into rolling hills, past Beckford’s Tower and Lansdown, with the Hare & Hounds on the hillside offering views, a real fire and roasts. Shorter options include a 4-mile Broadway Tower circular (2½ hours) in the northern Cotswolds that culminates at the turreted Broadway Tower and a return to the 17th-century Crown & Trumpet, a long-standing entry in the Good Beer Guide.
