Ultra-violent WWII sequel tops HBO Max global chart
While the Russell Crowe and Rami Malek courtroom drama Nuremberg has been finding an audience on home video, a much more violent World War II film is drawing younger crowds. Both films pleased their target viewers in theaters, though neither broke the box office wide open; Nuremberg grossed almost $50 million worldwide and carries a 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The films in question are Sisu and its follow-up, Sisu: Road to Revenge. Jalmari Helander returned to direct the sequel, reuniting Jorma Tommila as former soldier Aatami Korpi and adding Stephen Lang to the cast. The original Sisu made roughly $14 million worldwide on a budget under $10 million and ultimately found its audience on PVOD and streaming, while the sequel swaps the Nazi antagonists for Soviets and earned similarly strong reviews.
Sisu: Road to Revenge holds a 94% critics' score and an 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes but finished its theatrical run just under $10 million worldwide against a reported budget of about $12 million.
