University of Michigan student Lucas Mattson found dead after going missing
People reported that University of Michigan student Lucas Mattson, 19, was found dead in Ann Arbor a day after he was reported missing.
The Ann Arbor Police Department said Mattson’s body was discovered at 12:05 p.m. local time on Saturday, Jan. 24; he was last seen at 1 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 23. Police said the teen was "walking alone ... without a coat" before he was reported missing and that the nearly 20-hour search took place in "extreme cold conditions," involving AAPD officers, the University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security, and the University of Michigan Police Department Drone Unit. Authorities said the body showed "no obvious signs of trauma" and that foul play is not currently suspected.
The Michigan Daily reported Mattson was an engineering sophomore. The college’s Division of Public Safety and Security said on X, "It is with deep sadness that we share Lucas Mattson has been found deceased" and added, "Our hearts are with Lucas’s family, friends, and all those who knew and loved him during this incredibly difficult time." The Washtenaw County Medical Examiner’s Office will carry out a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death. The AAPD initially released a missing persons report on Jan. 24 saying he was considered in danger due to the "extreme frigid conditions," and the AAPD and the WCMEO did not respond to a request for comment on Sunday, Jan. 25.
