How Upton and Halstead reunited during the One Chicago crossover
Hailey Upton, now an FBI special agent based in Detroit, returned to Chicago after tracking a Bolivian drug mule on a commercial flight that suddenly lost communication. Firehouse 51 and federal agents prepared for a potential hijacking, but the autopiloted plane landed to reveal the passengers and crew dead.
Among the deceased was narco-courier Omar Bengoa, whom Upton's unit had been tracking. While searching Bengoa's hideaway, investigators found surveillance showing him beside Jay Halstead, prompting Upton to visit Sgt. Hank Voight at the Intelligence Unit. Upton also reported chatter about an American trafficker made into an undercover U.S.
military operative in Bolivia; Voight reacted, 'Halstead,' as she nodded. At the morgue an imposter cut into Bengoa's body and set the room ablaze; Upton chased the suspect, was ambushed and nearly shot before Halstead arrived and forced the assailant to flee.
