U.S. embassies in Asia seek donations for 250th July Fourth events
In December, President Trump announced a campaign to stage a series of Fourth of July celebrations for the nation’s 250th anniversary, calling it “the most spectacular birthday party the world has ever seen.” Across Asia, U.S. embassies and consulates have been soliciting large donations, sending “America 250” forms in Hong Kong and securing commitments in Japan.
At a five-course dinner at the Capella Singapore on Feb. 5, Ambassador Anjani Sinha told executives he would “sing and dance” and said, “I need your money,” urging contributions for events including an American rodeo and a Rockefeller Christmas tree lighting. Dozens of executives from American companies attended; Mr.
Sinha said another embassy had raised $37 million, and one person familiar with the matter said the embassy in Japan had raised about $35 million.
