NATO announced that the United States will hand over some commands to European allies as part of an effort to show that European members are taking more responsibility for conventional war planning. The United States will remain in overall charge of NATO and allied forces through the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, a post always held by an American and currently filled by Gen.

Alexus G. Grynkewich of the U.S. Air Force. NATO said the United States will take over maritime forces and now leads the alliance’s three core capabilities: land, air and maritime. U.S. officials have for years urged European allies to assume greater responsibilities so Washington can shift focus to the Pacific, a push that has been amplified under President Trump.

NATO described the announced changes as burden-sharing rather than a transfer of overall command.
