US House backs bid to block Canada tariffs in rebuke of Trump
The US House on Wednesday voted 219 to 211 to rescind tariffs that Donald Trump imposed on Canada last year, a rare bipartisan rebuke of the White House’s trade policy. Six Republicans — Don Bacon, Thomas Massie, Brian Fitzpatrick, Kevin Kiley, Dan Newhouse and Jeff Hurd — joined all Democrats except Jared Golden, who voted against the measure.
Before the vote was finalised Trump warned on Truth Social that “Any Republican, in the House or the Senate, that votes against TARIFFS will seriously suffer the consequences come Election time, and that includes Primaries!” and wrote that “TARIFFS have given us Economic and National Security.” Undoing the tariff policy would ultimately require the president’s approval, which was unlikely.
The measure next goes to the Senate, which has already voted to reject Trump’s tariffs on Canada and other countries; both chambers would have to approve the rollback and send the resolution to the president for signature or veto.
