A group of US lawmakers is pushing to block the Federal Reserve from ever issuing a central bank digital currency, saying any ban must be permanent. Congressman Michael Cloud wrote to House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate majority leader John Thune, and was joined by 28 other members of Congress.

The move responds to a proposed amendment to the Federal Reserve Act that would bar the central bank from issuing a CBDC until 2031. That amendment is part of the 300-page "21st Century ROAD to Housing Act" (HR 6644), released by the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs.

Cloud and his colleagues argued the temporary block is insufficient.
