US urges Americans to leave Iran after Trump warns of ‘very strong action’ over hangings
Independent.co reports that the US Department of State consular affairs has urged Americans to flee Iran after President Donald Trump said the United States would take "very strong action" if the Iranian government starts hanging protesters. Trump told CBS News: "I haven't heard about the hanging.
If they hang them, you're going to see some things... We will take very strong action if they do such a thing." Rights groups have said Iran is set to carry out its first execution of a protester on Wednesday, identifying Erfan Soltani, a resident of Fardis, as the individual facing the death penalty for alleged involvement in the demonstrations.
US special envoy Steve Witkoff reportedly met Tehran’s exiled crown prince, Reza Pahlavi, over the weekend, a senior US official told AXIOS. Separately, US-based HRANA said it had verified 2,003 deaths during the protests, including 1,850 protesters, 135 government-affiliated individuals, nine people under 18 and nine non-protester civilians.
