US and Venezuela restore diplomatic ties two months after Maduro’s capture
The United States and Venezuela announced on Thursday they are restoring diplomatic ties, a move that coincided with US interior secretary Doug Burgum’s two-day trip to the country. The US state department said the re-establishment of diplomatic and consular relations "will facilitate our joint efforts to promote stability, support economic recovery, and advance political reconciliation in Venezuela." Venezuela’s foreign ministry said it would "move forward in a new stage of constructive dialogue, based on mutual respect, the sovereign equality of states and cooperation between our people," calling the renewed ties "positive and mutually beneficial." Burgum, who leads the National Energy Dominance Council, said he had received assurances that Caracas would ensure the security of foreign mining companies and that dozens of firms had expressed interest in investing there.
