V for Vendetta Nears Its 21st Anniversary, Returning to Streaming Charts

One of the most important films of the 21st century celebrated its 20-year anniversary in 2025 and is about to celebrate its 21st anniversary exactly 1 week from today. The dystopian thriller has been influential and often read as prophetic, using a fictional framework to underline how history is doomed to repeat itself.

Co-written by the Wachowski siblings soon after The Matrix trilogy, the film handed directing duties to James McTeigue, a collaborator on the Matrix films. Set in an alternate England ruled by a totalitarian government, a masked vigilante played by Hugo Weaving dons a Guy Fawkes mask to attempt to overthrow the regime, while Natalie Portman anchors the story from the perspective of a young woman named Evey.

The movie was a critical and commercial success, grossing more than $130 million worldwide against a reported budget of approximately $55 million.
