Valve: loot boxes are like Pokemon, Magic and Labubu as it rebuts NY lawsuit

Valve says a court will decide whether the New York attorney general’s lawsuit against the company, which contends loot boxes are essentially gambling, has merit. In a statement to fans of Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2 and Team Fortress 2 in New York, the company said it has “serious concerns” about the demands from Letitia James and her office.

The company does not believe its “mystery boxes” violate New York gambling laws. Valve said it was “disappointed to see the NYAG make that claim after working to educate them about our virtual items and mystery boxes since they first reached out to us in early 2023,” adding that it rarely discusses litigation but wanted to explain the situation.
