Valve responds to NY lawsuit over loot boxes in CS2, Dota 2
Last month, Valve was sued by New York state Attorney General Letitia James over the maker’s implementation of loot boxes in games such as Counter-Strike 2 and Team Fortress 2, a complaint that called them "quintessential gambling." Valve published a response on Steam, saying it does not believe its loot boxes violate New York’s gambling laws and expressing disappointment "after working to educate them about our virtual items and mystery boxes since they first reached out to us in early 2023." In Counter-Strike 2, loot boxes can be given away but must be unlocked with the purchase of a key, and their contents are unknown; players might receive anything from a common skin to an extremely rare item that could sell for potentially thousands on third-party resale marketplaces.
