Valve's 2025 Steam Machine faces memory and storage shortages
The new hardware lineup revealed by Valve in 2025—the Steam Controller, Steam Frame VR headset, and Steam Machine—made a strong first impression. The Steam Machine in particular appeared streamlined, simple, and capable, a notable evolution over Valve's earlier attempts with the potential to bring living-room PC gaming closer to the mainstream.
Two big questions remained: how much, and when? That uncertainty has been sharpened by a RAMpocalypse driven by the rush to build AI systems, which has caused supply shortages and sharply higher prices for memory, SSDs, and GPUs.
Even if Valve can source components in quantities sufficient to meet demand—a very big if—the rising costs pose a serious problem. Valve has said it will not subsidize the Steam Machine’s price the way Sony and Microsoft do for their consoles, so the device will be more expensive than those rivals.
To have a realistic shot at widespread adoption, Valve at least needs its price to sit in the same ballpark as the consoles.
