Valve revealed new Steam Machine Verified guidance at GDC, but the criteria have prompted some head-scratching. The checklist asks that games run at "30FPS at 1080p for Verified" on the new mini PC, even though Valve also claims the box will deliver "6x Steam Deck" performance and a "4K 60fps" experience using tools like AMD FSR and a custom RDNA 3 GPU.

That 1080p/30fps baseline feels low for hardware pitched as markedly more powerful than the Deck. Beyond frame rates, players often encounter texture quirks and scaling issues at higher resolutions, and Valve explicitly says it is not testing "display resolution or legibility," which leaves gaps in how well a Verified label maps to real-world play quality.

The Steam Verified program remains a useful quick indicator of playability, while developer system requirements should set detailed expectations.
