Vanity Fair's smaller Oscars party stirs industry over Kardashian cover
Vanity Fair has pared back its Oscar party guest list, banned outside press and ran a Kardashian on its spring cover, moves that have unsettled parts of the industry. New Global Editorial Director Mark Guiducci framed the cuts as an effort to create a more intimate, curated event, but insiders note the list now favors fashion VIPs while leaving out some Hollywood executives from Netflix, Disney, Amazon and A24.
Guiducci has pitched returning the bash to its 1994 Morton’s roots for winners, nominees and A-listers. Critics, however, view putting Kylie Jenner on the cover as a tactic to lure stars such as Timothee Chalamet — a choice that rubbed showbiz figures the wrong way; one veteran sniffed, “Mark doesn’t know anyone.” His fashion-and-art background, the decision not to hire a Hollywood correspondent and the ill-fated West Coast editor hire that ended after Olivia Nuzzi’s scandal with Ryan Lizza have compounded the unease.
New rules are also drawing complaints.
