Venezuela Frees Key Opposition Figures as Government Courts U.S. Support
Venezuela on Sunday freed a group of prominent opposition leaders, including Juan Pablo Guanipa and Perkins Rocha. Ramón Guanipa Linares, Mr. Guanipa’s son, wrote on social media that after more than eight months of unjust imprisonment and more than a year and a half of being separated, the family would soon be able to embrace each other again.
Rights group Foro Penal counted at least 35 people released; the group had said last week that more than 650 were detained. The government issued no official statement about the releases, but Delcy Rodríguez has said she would close El Helicoide and has announced plans for a mass amnesty law.
Since the United States captured Mr. Maduro last month, Ms. Rodríguez has moved quickly to realign Venezuela with Washington, working closely with the Trump administration, redirecting oil exports toward the United States and dismissing officials seen as loyal to Mr.
