Marathon has been surrounded by controversy since its announcement: a revival of an older series reimagined as an extraction shooter, coming out alongside an entrenched extraction title and carrying the baggage of its developer's past issues. The launch looked fairly strong and early sentiment from players and streamers has grown more positive, yet many have fixated on SteamDB player numbers.

A post claiming Marathon lost 50% of its players prompted public pushback from industry figures. Overwatch senior designer Dylan Snyder wrote, “Feel free to dislike and pass up any game you want, more power to you, but this is big unemployed, maidenless behavior,” and added that, “As someone who knows actual Overwatch player numbers, I tend to just laugh about SteamDB being used as a mic drop.” He noted SteamDB only covers one platform and only tracks concurrent players, not copies sold.
