Will Lewis, the chief executive and publisher, announced his departure on Saturday, days after sweeping layoffs hit the legacy publication.

Jeff D'Onofrio will serve as interim CEO and publisher, effective February 7.

D'Onofrio said the publication's resolute commitment to writing the first rough draft of history anchors and imprints its future, and that he is honored to help chart that future and to take the lead in securing both its legacy and business.
