Wayne Rooney says he would join Michael Carrick's Manchester United coaching staff
According to Goal, Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney said on his BBC podcast on Monday he would accept a role as an assistant coach at Old Trafford if asked to work under former teammate Michael Carrick, who is expected to be named interim manager imminently.
Rooney said, "Of course I would. It's a no-brainer," and added, "I'm not begging a job here by the way. Just so everyone knows, if I was asked to go in of course I would. Appointing the manager is the most important thing." He argued the club "needs people who know the football club," referenced Roy Keane and said restoring the club's identity and "family feel" is a priority.
Rooney has not held a coaching post since being sacked by Plymouth Argyle on New Year's Eve 2024 and has said he would like to return to management "but it would have to be the right club." Reports suggest Carrick has agreed to take the interim job and is finalising his support staff, reportedly building a team of three or four close aides, and it remains to be seen whether Darren Fletcher will remain in a senior role or return to the Under-18s.
