West Ham set up an FA Cup quarter-final against Leeds after a penalty shootout against Brentford, the third tie in a row in which the conventional 90 minutes proved insufficient. Two goals apiece from Jarrod Bowen and Igor Thiago cancelled each other out, and extra time failed to produce a winner.

The shootout was decided in part by Dango Ouattara’s woeful spot-kick, an embarrassingly weak Panenka that looped into Alphonse Areola’s hands. Keith Andrews defended Ouattara after the miss. “I’m not annoyed at all,” he said. “I think the easiest thing for a footballer to do is not take a penalty.

It takes unbelievable courage on a stage like that to take a penalty... I despise the culture around players that miss penalty kicks – national heroes that have done it. Ridiculed, persecuted. I think it’s disgusting...
