Bitcoin is trading near $68,900. In mid-2010 the coin changed hands for roughly $0.08, so a $1,000 investment would have bought about 12,500 BTC — a holding now worth approximately $861,250,000. Researchers estimate Satoshi Nakamoto mined between 600,000 and 1.1 million BTC in Bitcoin’s first year, a figure derived from analysis of the so-called “Patoshi pattern.” At today’s price those holdings would be worth roughly $41.3 billion to $75.8 billion.

Most of Satoshi’s early addresses remain dormant; researchers believe he controls over 20,000 early mining addresses, many containing exactly 50 BTC, and none have shown outgoing activity. Interest in those wallets flared after a recent 2.56 BTC transfer to the genesis address; blockchain data shows the genesis address now holds over 103 BTC, but the original 50 BTC reward from the genesis block is technically unspendable, a point Charles Hoskinson has previously explained.

If even a portion of Satoshi’s estimated coins were moved, it would likely send shockwaves through the market.
