Former manager Eduard Geyer heavily criticised Borussia Dortmund after their Champions League play-off second leg away to Atalanta Bergamo. In the rematch, BVB squandered a 2-0 lead and a late mistake by goalkeeper Gregor Kobel led to a penalty that made it 4-1.

The previous week Atalanta had been routed 6-1 at the same venue by Bayern Munich. In Kicker, Geyer drew a direct comparison between the two German clubs and questioned Dortmund's showing: “The only surprise was the clarity of the victory, and you have to wonder what was going on with Borussia Dortmund the round before, that they went down 1-4 at the same ground.” He argued the contrasting results pointed to a wider gap in domestic quality: "Behind FC Bayern, who have represented us so well on the international stage for years, the gap in quality in the Bundesliga is enormous," wrote Geyer.

The comment comes with Vincent Kompany’s Bayern well clear at the top of the Bundesliga after 26 matchdays, nine points ahead of Dortmund.
