Where Monarch Season 2 Fits in the Monsterverse Timeline

After a two-year wait, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters returns with Season 2. The Monsterverse spin-off premiered on Apple TV in December 2023 and earned an 87% critical score, the best in the franchise. Although the Monsterverse spans more than seven decades in-story, its releases are not presented in chronological order.

The series is set much earlier than its placement between Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and the upcoming Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. Monarch’s present-day timeline unfolds in 2017, following Cate Randa (Anna Sawai), Kentaro Randa (Ren Watabe), Hiroshi (Takehiro Hira), hacker May (Kiersey Clemons), and Monarch co-founder Keiko Miura (Mari Yamamoto).

The Season 2 premiere picks up after Season 1, with Kong attacking a Monarch base on Skull Island after Cate, May and Keiko return from the Hollow Earth. In franchise terms, that places the season 44 years after Kong: Skull Island (1973), three years after Godzilla (2014), two years after Monarch Season 1 (2015), and two years before Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019).
