Which MLB Teams Are in the American League?
The American League is one of the two leagues that make up Major League Baseball. It began as the Western League in the late 19th century and by 1900 had emerged as a direct major-league competitor to the National League. The 1903 National Agreement formalized the leagues' partnership and set the stage for the modern World Series era.
For most of the 20th century the leagues operated largely separately; regular-season interleague play did not start until 1997, and the American and National Leagues merged into a single organization in 2000. The American League now comprises 15 clubs — 14 in the United States and one in Canada — and its teams have won 68 World Series titles compared with 53 for the National League.
The New York Yankees account for 27 of those championships, the most of any club. The 15 teams are divided into three divisions of five clubs each. AL East: Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays.
