Who Is Peter Mandelson, the UK Ex-Ambassador Fired Over His Epstein Ties?
The former British ambassador to the United States was arrested on Monday, months after being fired over his ties to Jeffrey Epstein. Mr. Mandelson, 72, spent four decades in British politics and had only recently taken up the Washington post, becoming a fixture in social circles and a regular visitor to the White House.
His appointment was viewed by some as a risky choice. It was already known that he had an association with Epstein, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer later said Mr. Mandelson had lied about the extent of his contacts. Seven months into the job, emails first published by Bloomberg News showed the relationship’s depth and extent was materially different from what had been known at the time of his appointment, and Mr.
Starmer dismissed him. The Justice Department’s release of additional Epstein files on Jan. 30 suggested a much closer friendship and appeared to show that, while in government, Mr. Mandelson might have provided confidential and market-sensitive information to Epstein.
