The first teaser for Dune: Part Three introduces Robert Pattinson’s enigmatic character Scytale, a figure with deep roots in the series’ dense mythology. The trailer and the material it draws on suggest his role will be significant in Paul Atreides’ story. Scytale is a Face Dancer, a shapeshifter engineered by the Bene Tleilax, a secretive religious order focused on genetic manipulation.

He first appears in Dune: Messiah and becomes part of a plot against Paul by sending a ghola — a physical clone of a dead person who initially has none of their memories — of Paul’s ally Duncan Idaho. The Bene Tleilax aim to restore the ghola’s memories and personality so they can perpetuate minds across cloned bodies and pursue effective immortality.

That restoration does succeed in the books, leading to a confrontation between Scytale and Paul in which Paul emerges victorious. Scytale is later reborn, joins the ruling council of the Bene Tleilax and becomes one of the order’s last carriers of genetic material as they seek to return to life.
