Why Curry May Be Forced to Leave SVU Despite Benson's Protest
Captain Olivia Benson has little time to rest in Season 27, and her biggest challenge comes from above. Chief of Detectives Kathryn Tynan has pushed for Benson to move into a deputy chief role Benson declined, arguing she is best used on the front lines while Tynan says Benson struggles to delegate after years leading the unit.
In the episode "Thirsty," Tynan disrupts the squad to push through the changes she wants. After an NYPD boxing match, Tynan questions Captain Renee Curry about taking a demotion to SVU and quietly begins shifting perceptions to put Curry back on top. Around the same time, Detective John Whalen passes along a rumor linking Tynan to Jimmy Griffin and a 2001 off-duty shooting that was allegedly wiped away with Tynan’s involvement.
After closing another case, Curry tells Benson she was offered the deputy chief position and turned it down, then reveals she is being reassigned as executive officer at the 16th — effectively being pulled out of SVU but kept nearby.
