The US stock market staged a mid-session recovery after the Supreme Court struck down President Trump's emergency tariffs in a 6-3 ruling, a decision that removed a major inflationary and supply-chain overhang and could trigger more than $150 billion in refunds.

The S&P 500 traded around 6,890 at press time, up 0.45% from yesterday’s close, as investors weighed that relief against weaker growth and rising prices. Stagflation worries remain after advance Q4 GDP slowed to 1.4% (below the 2.8% consensus) and Core PCE accelerated to 3.0% year‑on‑year, a third straight month of faster inflation that has pushed back odds of rate cuts.

The CBOE Volatility Index fell roughly 5%, dropping below 20, and the Nasdaq led gains—up about 172 points (0.76%)—while the Dow rose roughly 68 points. Sector action was mixed. Technology (XLK) led the rebound, while Energy (XLE) slipped about 1.09% despite WTI holding above $66 and Brent above $71; XLE’s chart, however, shows a bullish flag that could target higher levels if it breaks out.
