At least 115 charges have hung over Manchester City since early 2023, and an independent hearing into alleged monetary mismanagement concluded late in 2024. No verdict has been delivered, and any punishment is expected to be appealed; it has been suggested City would accept an initial ruling because they could immediately return the matter to court.

Various sanctions have been mooted, from points deductions to expulsion, transfer embargoes and large fines. Football finance expert Kieran Maguire noted precedent, pointing to six- and four-point deductions for Everton and Nottingham Forest over three-year periods, and argued that City’s alleged breaches across a nine-year span could justify a far larger penalty — somewhere between 40 and 60 points.

Former club executive Keith Wyness said a 60-point deduction “would make sense” if City were found guilty and added that the club could accept such a ruling while preparing an appeal.
