Why Price Wrestled with His Legal 'Compass' Prosecuting a Murder Case
In "Remedies," Season 25 followed the 27th Precinct as they investigated the killing of Emily Starr, a homeopathic social media influencer who rose to fame with remedies and a story of beating cancer. Detectives traced the murder weapon to a recent gun show and arrested Carol Massey, who confessed to the killing.
At trial, Carol's defense argued Emily had become a deadly influence on Lauren Massey, who was battling cancer and had spent more than $23,000 on a homeopathic regimen that led her to forego conventional treatment. The defense said Emily's PH-level balancing juice cleanses and cult-like tactics had isolated Lauren, making her an imminent threat to the daughter.
A.D.A.s Nolan Price and Samantha Maroun were divided. Price, whose mother had died of breast cancer after briefly abandoning chemotherapy for homeopathic treatments, began to see Emily as a fraudulent figure and wavered in his prosecution.
