Why Severide Was Missing on Chicago Fire

Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) was absent during the latest chaos on Season 14's Episode 15, "Do Not Resuscitate." Fans noticed he was out of the office on May 18's episode.

The episode explains he's OOO because he's sitting for the Captain's exam. Lizzy Novak told Violet Mikami and Sal Vasquez she'd heard Pascal wanted Severide to assume his post; Violet explained, "Kidd isn't sure yet," and that "Severide is out this week because he's sitting for the Captain's exam."

Chief Dom Pascal's departure followed his arrest by federal agents during the One Chicago crossover and ultimately cost him his position. Before leaving, Pascal asked Severide to speak with Lucy and left the Chief's office to him, including a copy of the Chief's Handbook.

Severide remains a central figure at Firehouse 51. "It's never lost on me how special it is to be a part of something with the longevity this has," Kinney told Us Weekly in May 2022.
