Disney's live-action remakes have been uneven, and one that drew mixed reviews is finding a second life on streaming. Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin was released in May 2019 with a production budget of $183 million and crossed $1 billion worldwide, becoming the ninth-highest-grossing film of the year.

It ranks as the eighth-most-expensive and third-highest-grossing Disney live-action remake. The seven-year-old Will Smith–starrer holds a 57% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 94% audience rating, reflecting a divided reception. Recent streaming activity suggests viewers are rediscovering the film: Ritchie’s Aladdin entered Disney+’s Top 10 in the U.S.

on February 18 at #10 and hit #9 on Disney+ in Hungary on February 14 and February 16. Plans for a live-action sequel have stalled. In 2020 Ritchie said a follow-up was in the works with writers John Gatins and Andrea Berloff attached, but there have been few updates since.
