Will Smith's 'I, Robot' Is a Streaming Hit on AMC+
Once dismissed as a fairly conventional action movie, I, Robot has reappeared on streaming and climbed to ninth place among films on AMC+. The unexpected resurgence finds the 2004 Will Smith vehicle drawing renewed audience attention despite its reputation as an unfaithful adaptation.
Directed by Alex Proyas and adapted for the screen by Jeff Vintar, the film casts Smith as detective Del Spooner, who investigates the murder of an enigmatic scientist named Dr. Alfred with help from robopsychologist Dr. Susan Calvin. The ensemble also includes Bridget Moynahan, Alan Tudyk, Bruce Greenwood, Chi McBride, James Cromwell, Adrian Ricard, Fiona Hogan and Shia LaBeouf.
The movie borrows pieces from two Isaac Asimov novels rather than following either closely. From I, Robot it takes the three laws of robotics, the character of Dr. Susan Calvin and the title; from The Caves of Steel it borrows the basic premise of a detective story involving robots, while otherwise departing from both books.
