Winter storm brings snow to Florida and Georgia, threatens Northeast
A winter storm delivered a chilly blast to the Southeast early on Sunday, with snow reported as far south as Florida and winter storm warnings in parts of the Florida panhandle, Georgia and southeastern Alabama. A winter storm warning covered the northwest Florida panhandle, where up to two inches of snow was expected, and central and southwestern Georgia, including Macon and Dublin, and southeastern Alabama were under warnings through 1 p.m.
with up to three inches forecast. Forecasters said light snow began falling in Mobile and Baldwin County, and that snow started in the Columbus area, likely falling heaviest in central Georgia between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m.; Monticello in Jasper County had three inches by 9 a.m. The system was also expected to affect the Northeast from Sunday morning through late Sunday night, with New York City forecast to get two to four inches and Boston three to six inches.
Winter weather advisories stretched from Philadelphia to Boston to Portland, Maine, and some of the highest totals — up to eight inches — were possible in eastern Massachusetts, eastern Connecticut and Rhode Island. Snow and freezing rain were falling in New York City and were expected to persist through the day; a Weather Prediction Center meteorologist said the event there would be a long-duration but light snowfall.
Forecasters said the storm formed in the Gulf and was pulling moisture northward as anomalously cold arctic air moved south from Canada.
