Witkoff and Kushner: Where Talks on Iran, Ukraine and Gaza Stand
Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have been shuttling between Geneva, meetings on Ukraine and Washington this week, pressing U.S. diplomacy into three of the world’s most entrenched conflicts. Their energy as noncareer envoys has been notable, but tangible breakthroughs remain limited.
In Geneva, Oman-mediated talks with Iran produced an agreement on a “set of guiding principles” and an exchange of draft texts to follow consultations with capitals; a U.S. official said Iran would offer more detailed proposals within two weeks. At the same time, American forces are building up near Tehran, and officials are preparing for a possible large-scale strike even as diplomacy continues.
Proposed nuclear concessions under discussion include suspension of enrichment for up to 10 years, surrendering highly enriched uranium and limiting enrichment to 3.67 percent with International Atomic Energy Agency oversight, while U.S. demands also aim to curb Iran’s ballistic missiles and support for proxies — demands Iran has rejected.
