Writers reframed Lae'zel and Shadowheart's romance by finding common ground
Lae'zel and Shadowheart begin Baldur's Gate 3 with a noticeably strained relationship, but writers Kevin VanOrd and John Corcoran say those tensions were shaped deliberately. VanOrd recalls sitting down with Corcoran early in development to compare the characters and set some narrative limits.
Both companions struggle against the values they were raised with—Shadowheart with the Sharrans and Lae'zel with her githyanki background. The writers used those parallels to craft more convincing dialogue and, ultimately, a romance that might otherwise have felt unlikely.
"We realized we were writing the same story from different directions, and so that allowed us to reframe their initial clash and inform their later conversations," they say. The approach helped shift the tone of their interactions over time, and the article's author notes she hasn't pursued that romance herself but can see how VanOrd and Corcoran reconciled the two characters' differences.
