Within hours of news that the Wu‑Tang Clan had been nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, founding member Oliver “Power” Grant died. Grant, an executive producer who launched the Wu Wear apparel line, backed the group financially in its early days and helped make their rise possible.

The collective formed in 1992 in Staten Island and included GZA, RZA, Method Man, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, Inspectah Deck, Ol’ Dirty Bastard (who died in 2004), Masta Killa, U‑God and, later, Cappadonna. Their debut, Enter the Wu‑Tang (36 Chambers), mixed martial arts, Eastern philosophy, kung‑fu movie samples, comic book references and comic interludes to create a strikingly original sound.

At a moment when West Coast artists like Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg had pushed hip hop toward a radio‑ready G‑funk sound, Wu‑Tang renewed attention on New York and helped spark an East Coast renaissance.
