Xabi Alonso issues statement after Real Madrid dismissal
Xabi Alonso has addressed his exit from Real Madrid after his tenure at the Santiago Bernabeu was brought to a premature end when he was dismissed following Sunday's 3-2 Spanish Super Cup final defeat to Barcelona, Goal reports.
Alonso posted a heartfelt message on Instagram alongside an image of him on the touchline, refusing to point fingers or offer excuses and expressing pride at having led the club where he won the Champions League as a player. He acknowledged the reality that results had fallen short of the lofty standards expected in the Spanish capital and wrote: "This professional stage concludes, and it has not turned out as we would have liked," adding, "Coaching Real Madrid has been an honour and a responsibility."
He closed by thanking "the club, the players and above all the fans and Madrid fans for their trust and support," saying, "I leave with respect, gratitude, and pride that I did my best." More to follow.
