Tottenham were knocked out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage after losing 7-5 on aggregate to Atletico Madrid, despite a 3-2 win in north London. Their mauling in the Spanish capital left them with a mountain to climb, and a spirited display ultimately proved insufficient.

Atletico had the ball in the net inside six minutes through Ademola Lookman, but it was ruled out for offside. Spurs went ahead on the night on the half-hour when Mathys Tel's quick throw-in found Randal Kolo Muani, who rose to head home. Xavi Simons then teed up Tel only for Juan Musso to make a smart save, while Guglielmo Vicario produced a terrific stop from Giuliano Simeone on the stroke of half-time.

Shortly after the break Spurs were undone on the counter when Julian Alvarez swept a shot into the top corner following an incident in which Simons was bundled over but no foul was given; the goal stood after a VAR check. Simons soon curled Tottenham level, but David Hancko ghosted in from a corner to equalise 15 minutes from time.
