At the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Microsoft used its annual slot to present Project Helix. Giovanni Colantonio observed that the “Festival of Gaming” rebrand largely amounted to some inconveniently placed food trucks, and despite concerns that some international attendees might avoid traveling to Donald Trump’s America, the convention appeared busy.

The Project Helix presentation confirmed what was already known: the next Xbox will be Windows-based, will run PC games, and promises high-end graphics. Developers are slated to receive dev kits next year, and the overall plan — and the GDC talk itself — were likely set well before Microsoft Gaming CEO Asha Sharma took the role.

The talk dominated conversation at GDC, in part because of recent drama and instability around Xbox. Speculation from the tech channel Moore’s Law is Dead fueled rumors of a $1,000 price tag, leaving some developers unsure whether to target the device and prompting confusion about what Project Helix will actually be.
