Yesterday to leave Netflix at month’s end after Ana de Armas trailer dispute
Movieweb reports that Danny Boyle’s 2019 film Yesterday will depart Netflix at the end of the month, a title long linked to controversy over Ana de Armas appearing in promotional material but not in the finished film.
The film, which imagines a world where only one person remembers the Beatles, was a reasonable hit, but de Armas appeared in the trailer and in Google cast listings while her scenes were cut from the final film. Two fans who rented the movie to see her sued for $5 million alleging false advertising, unjust enrichment and unfair competition after paying $3.99; a judge threw out the case, calling the pair’s issues a "self-inflicted injury," and the claim was settled while Universal said it had spent two years and thousands defending what it called "a patently frivolous lawsuit."
De Armas’ scenes were reportedly sidelined after test audiences felt her character distracted from Lily James’ main love interest, and the actress has since appeared in projects including Knives Out, Blonde, The Gray Man, Ghosted, No Time to Die, Ballerina and the 2025 survival thriller Eden. Yesterday will leave Netflix at month’s end and, as noted in the report, viewers checking it before it departs will not see de Armas in the film; she does not have a string of upcoming roles confirmed for the future.
