A dark-haired man stands in a New York City bookstore and chats with a woman, realizing that he's met the love of his life. He then proceeds to watch her from the street, look up her social media profiles, and find out everything he possibly can about her. That opening isn't the start of an epic romance but a portrait of a creepy stalker — and the beginning of what is arguably the best Netflix thriller.

You premiered on Lifetime in 2018, moved to Netflix for Season 2, and quickly became an addictive, dramatic series. Just as Joe obsesses over Beck, Love, Marienne, Kate, and Bronte, viewers keep returning to his odd motives, creepy beliefs, and terrible actions.

Across five seasons the show moves from unsettling dating behavior in Season 1 to the revelations of Seasons 2 and 3, the hallucinations and social commentary of Season 4, and a riveting final arc in Season 5 in which Joe is clearly going to be caught. Anyone who's felt the anxiety of dating can recognize the surface-level panic the series dramatizes, but You goes deeper.
