Three episodes into Season 4, Dark Winds turns up the intensity as Lt. Joe Leaphorn meets the season’s antagonist, Irene Vaggan. The confrontation in Episode 3 makes clear that Vaggan is obsessed with Leaphorn, and that obsession makes her especially dangerous.

McClarnon says Vaggan’s fixation has roots in a German subculture built around the Winnetou books, where people dress as Native Americans and romanticize that way of life. He notes a real similarity between the two characters: both are strong-willed and driven by belief.

Joe’s convictions center on his culture and his job protecting his people, while Vaggan channels her drive in a far darker way. This season finds Joe nearly a different man after the changes of Season 3, yet still searching for hózhó — balance and peace of mind.
