Zelda: BotW on Virtual Boy gets a permanent Blood Moon mode — Polygon

Nintendo’s new throwback Virtual Boy headset is out today, and it can run Switch games that feature a Nintendo Labo VR mode — which makes it possible to play The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in stereoscopic 3D. The headset offers a single color option: red.

That tint turns Hyrule’s greens and blues into a constant, Blood Moon‑like cast because the lenses are fixed. An update notes the red filters can be removed despite the product instructions warning against disassembly; the suggested method is to pull the interior faceplate toward you and grab it around the space for your nose.

The Virtual Boy does provide a noticeable 3D effect, lifting the UI away from the action and adding depth to environments and towns. Low‑stakes activities — chatting with NPCs, wandering villages, gliding and chopping trees — gain a fresh novelty, and water reflections look clearer with red ripples revealing the bottom.
