Zootopia 2 Topples The Lion King at Domestic Box Office
Zootopia 2 has pushed its domestic total to $425.8 million, making it the top-grossing movie at the 2025 domestic box office and edging past Jack Black’s A Minecraft Movie, which stands at $424.1 million. The sequel’s global haul of $1.4 billion has also seen it climb past a number of films.
The milestone puts Zootopia 2 ahead of The Lion King’s domestic total of $425 million. The Lion King, released in 1994, relied mostly on hand-drawn animation and remains the highest-grossing hand-drawn animated film of all time, a status that could be challenged again by future re-releases.
Beyond box office totals, The Lion King’s cultural impact is clear: it was the top-grossing movie of 1994, finished as the fifth-highest-grossing film of the 1990s, and earned multiple Oscar and Golden Globe wins. It currently ranks as the tenth-highest-grossing animated film domestically, with the next-oldest entry in the top 10 being Shrek 2 from 2004, and only two non-sequels in that list — The Lion King and The Super Mario Bros.
