Welcome to Mystic Falls, Virginia, a fictional city with a rich history and traditions that are bizarre until they point to a tragic and sordid past. Oh-oh-oh. Elena Gilbert is a 17-year-old girl who feels gloomy and lonely because of the recent death of her parents in a car accident in which she survived. She lives with her brother Jeremy, 15, and Aunt Jenna, who is young enough to only call her Jenna, not Aunt. One day a , young and mysterious guy comes to school (he is also a secret vampire) named Stefan Salvatore and quickly falls in love with Elena. However, Elena is still restless, as Jeremy has fallen into a crowd of drug addicts and is chasing a rebellious girl named Vicky. Vicky also turns out to be the sister of Elena's ex-boyfriend Matt. Unbeknownst to everyone, Stefan's brother Damon (also a vampire) appears in the city. He makes himself felt by biting several children in the woods, including Vicky, whom he eventually converts. In this vampire world, if a person dies with vampire blood in their system, they come back a vampire. The Salvatore brothers can walk in the sunlight thanks to the magic rings they wear, but they won't sparkle anyway. Elena meets Damon at Stefan's ancestral estate, where he is, in general, and naughty, mentions Stefan's ex-girlfriend, Katherine, and also hints that Stefan stole Katherine from him.
